In The Bag - Kristie King

Kristie King is a member of the http://www.discgolf.com/ team member. She's got a mix of DGA and Discraft discs that she uses. Here's her In The Bag video from 2011 shot by MurderMike.

Here's Kristie's 2013 In The Bag video Central Coast Disc Golf which shows not just her discs but several of her shots from the tournament she was playing.

I have one DGA Rogue that I like a lot. I don't find them in our local disc golf supply shop. But they are available online from several retailers as well DGA.

Beginner Disc Selection Advice

The video on this post is a good video on beginner disc selection. I'm not sure who this guy is but he sure has good advice in all of his videos. Wish I'd seen this video when I started playing three or so years ago.

The following is copied from his YouTube page for this video. Nice thing about the list of beginner discs does not favor any one disc manufacturer over others.

This is a video giving advice on how to decide which golf discs to buy during your first months / year as a disc golfer. A lot of this is my personal opinion based on what I've seen work for myself and others, as well as what has not worked. I think most things I've said can apply to all new players of the game, but don't take this video as gospel, test out what I'm telling you for yourself and if you think I'm wrong about something, say so. I am still learning just like you are.

To summarize, I recommend starting off throwing just mids and putters while you learn the fundamentals, then gradually working your way into the world of drivers beginning with the slower drivers (Fairway drivers).

Some molds I suggest working with are the following:

Putters: MVP Ions, Innova Aviars, Gateway Wizards, Discraft Challengers, Magnets Mids: MVP Axis, Discraft Comet, Buzz, Innova Shark, Roc, Latitude 64 Fuse Slow drivers: Innova Leopard, Teebird, Millennium JLS, Discraft Cyclone Fast Drivers: Millennium OLF, OLS, Discmania PD, TD, Innova Starfire, Valkyrie, Discraft Avenger and Avenger SS Max speed drivers: Millennium Quasar, Discraft Nuke, Innova Destroyer

There are plenty of other good discs out there, these are just discs I have personal experience with and feel are pretty good overall.

In general, work with slow, neutral discs in lighter weights (165-170g) to begin with, and as you learn the game slowly work faster discs into your bag if you find you can control them.

Release Angles Tutorial

Watching the Will Shusterick video there is mention made of "release points." Not being sure of what is meant by "release points" I began a search on that in the videos and the web. What I have come to understand about "release points" or angles is that term refers to the way a shot is thrown to accomplish a flat shot, a hyzer or an anhyzer.

The DGA (Disc Golf Association) has a good instructional video on driving but there's no mention of release points. Merle mentions visualizing the line of flight but not "release points." The best video I came up with is below. It's a short video but packed with a lot of information, and good video footage of shots showing release angles or points. Hope this helps add to improving your disc golf game!

Disc Dyeing Tutorial

Just found this Disc Dyeing Tutorial on All Things Disc Golf. Wanted to share it with you as it seems to be more recent than the previous posts on disc dyeing and it covers both stencil and shaving cream dyeing.

My first attempt wasn't highly successful as I didn't have the right dye. Hopefully, with the instructions in the above linked tutorial, future attempts will be more successful. Felix Castro recently dyed a disc using a stencil and it came out pretty well for a first attempt.

May all your disc dyeing attempts be successful beyond your wildest dreams!!!

The Ground Up, Hole 27 and more from DeLaveaga

All Things Disc Golf had an a post by Jack Trageser, The Ground Up, on saving strokes in terrain that is not flat. Here in the QCA we have a lot of courses with varying terrain. Not necessarily as dramatic as DeLaveaga and other courses in mountainous or hilly parts of the country but challenging just the same.

I'd seen the article "The Ground Up" before. What I don't recall is having gone to the link showing how four different pros; Greg Barsby, Patrick Brown, Don Smith, and Avery Jenkins, approach the downhill drive from the teepad, 550 feet, to the basket on the last hole, #27, of the DeLaveaga course.

At the end of each of the four videos are links to several other videos of shots atdifferent holes on the DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course. It looks like it'd be fun to play it!

Enjoy!!!

In The Bag - Paul McBeth

Here's a look at two different In the Bag videos with Paul McBeth. The first one from 2012, which also gets into Paul McBeth's head, the second one from 2013,and the third one from 2014. It's interesting to see if there's been a change over the last three years or not. Both the 2013 and 2014 videos come from Spin TV while the 2012 video comes from MurderMike.

Heavy Disc has a pretty good disc golf blog and the subject of HD's June 30 post is "Getting Picky on the Backhand." He also provides some stop frame images with lines indicating the his body alignment as well as three or four pro players.

Heavy Disc covers several aspects of his and others form. Plus, he included a bit of in depth input by a DGCR (Disc Golf Course Review) form master, Sidewinder 22.

I've been working on my stand still delivery as recommended by Will Shusterick in his driving video. Don't think I've ever used a hop step though I've seen Kalvin Kalafut use that when he's been out on league night.

Below is a super slow motion video of Shusterick driving. This video was shot at 300 frames per second! That's pretty cool!

The Felix Castro 3 Disc Challenge

Eight Clock Tower Disc Golf League players waited out the rain last Thursday to participate in The Felix Castro 3 Disc Challenge at Slattery Park in Davenport. Each player's entry fee netted them a specially stamped Discraft driver, mid-range and putter.

Felix and Tom waiting out the storm before getting to pick their discs.

There were two models of drivers to choose from, a Surge (Z Plastic) or a Stalker (CryZtal Plastic). The mid-range discs were Buzzzes in either Z Plastic or CryZtal Plastic. (Any Buzzz is a great mid-range in my opinion.) The putters were Bangers in Pro-D Plastic.

A good time was had by all as most had never thrown either of the disc models except for Felix and I who both use Buzzzes. Thus, the challenge of playing with discs we'd never thrown before. I believe all left with a better understanding of the discs acquired as participants in this challenge.

Jotham focusing on his upshot.

Pete focusing on his upshot.

Felix throwing his upshot on No. 2.

Shawn Clark teeing off. Shawn took first place with a score of 54.

Tom Lafrenz taking his upshot to the basket on No. 5. Tom took second place with a score of 55!

There are still some Buzzzes, Surges and Stalkers available for purchase. The Credit Union will have a sample of each of the discs available on display. Purchases can be made by contacting Joe Nobiling at 309-794-5671 or visiting me at my desk, if you work at the Clock Tower.

And the winners of the Close To Pin discs are; Shawn Clark, Felix Castro and Jotham Povich! Todd Hazen is on the far left and Yogi Patel is on the far right.
