Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac

Quite possibly the greatest hazard to face a disc golfer is catching Poison Ivy. At least in our area of the midwest. "...according to the American Academy of Dermatology 85% of the population (Disc Golf Family Post 44)" are allergic to one if not all of those plants. My wife is one of the 15% that aren't affected. She had a relative that could eat poison ivy and not be affected! That's crazy! At least in my mind. But, hey, if you've got it. Flaunt it! And he did.

Disc Golf Family Post 44 has a very informative post about this subject for all of us to read and file away for future reference.

More Ways to Play

It's November. The skies get gray and shorter and shorter are the days. So, how do you get to play disc golf at this time of year when there's less light and temps are much cooler. Especially here in the Midwest?

Mind, Body, Disc's October 15, 2014 blog post provides 7 ways to get more time in playing this sport! Read it and see if you can work for you! I already implement numbers 2, 6 and 7. Playing a Glow Round sounds like fun but I'd prefer playing one on a flat course.

The Magellan Outdoor Deluxe Disc Golf Backpack

There's a new $30 backpack disc golf bag that's catching a lot of disc golfer's eyes called The Magellan. Should you be thinking it's time for a papa or momma to get a brand new bag, perhaps the video below will give you cause to say, "That's the ONE for ME!!!"

PutterbeadZ

Drive for the Show! Putt for the Dough! You hear this a lot in disc golf circles and it's true because as Tricia Lafferty, a contributor to Doglegdiscgolf.com states, "Putting is the part of the game where you actually score, and can drastically raise or lower your score. If you are a consistent and accurate putter, your scores can drop drastically...The only way to get better at putting is to practice it. A tweak in thumb placement, release point, grip, and technique can make a difference, but you will only know if you practice. Putting needs to become automatic, and over thinking creates mistakes." I realize this weakness in my play. Too often I blow a putt within the 30 meter circle around a basket and I will score a 4 or 5 where had I not blown the first putt attempt, I'd score a 3 or 4!

Tricia's post on a product called Putter BeadZ provides information on a product to help one practice at putting without having to mark off the meters or feet every time they go out to practice putting. Give it a read. Might be a tool you can find useful or you can concoct a similar product on your own to help make your putting practice less hassle free. Myself, I usually try something like a game of Around the World (remember that basketball challenge?) It gives me variety in distance and locations from within the 30 (or more) meter circle around the basket.

Building a Disc Golf Home Gym, the Jump Rope

So, here's a way to improve distance on the disc golf course that I hadn't thought about. And, believe me, it isn't an easy task for myself, speaking from past experience! Throw in a bit of uncoordination to boot! Check out this Mind, Body, Disc blog post.

Field Work Inside View

Here's a video of Paul McBeth and Jared Roan showing what they practice on when doing field work. For those of us unfamiliar with field work, this video gives a good idea of a direction one can take in field work.

    iPhone 6+ Slow Motion

I do own an iPhone and I don't know the video camera capability of Android or other smart phones. But this post by Hyzer Flipped Disc Golf on the iPhone 6+ Slow Motion is perfect for Disc Golf shows a fine example of the iPhone 6's capability. I'm not saying run out and buy an iPhone 6. I'm not nor will I for a while to come!

10 Questions asked of Paul McBeth

Average Disc Golf caught up with Paul McBeth this past August and posed 10 questions to him. You can read the post here.

    The best question, imho, was:

    2. For average, regular players, what is the best tip you could give them?

    "Never stop having fun,..."

Paul McBeth did win the Worlds tournament for a 3rd time recently and below is a video of the Final 9 holes of the leaders - Ricky Wysocki, Paul McBeth, Paul Ulibarri, and Nate Doss - at this year's Worlds tourney in Portland, OR.

    Disc Dyeing

Is it time for some of us to consider a winter time project? I believe the video on Disc Dyeing (at least that I know of) to be well done and one of the better resources on the process of dyeing discs. Maybe because it seems it's one of the most recent ones.

Here's a link to the Disc Family Blog Post 39. The post contains a downloadable step-by-step guide as well as some good reading about disc dyeing.

Pitch and Putt and Soul Crusher courses

Pitch and Putt and Soul Crusher courses are two extremely different type of courses described in the Disc Golf Family blog post 32 where they defend the concept of Pitch and Putt courses.

To put it simply a Pitch and Putt course is where all holes are fairly easy par 3s with distance from teepad to basket not exceeding 300 yards or so. Courses like this are usually way too easy for most seasoned veterans of the sport as they can probably deuce, if not ace, almost every hole.

In the immediate Quad Cities we have one Pitch and Putt course, Slattery Park in Davenport, IA. It's a six hole course and not one hole is over 300 feet or not by much if it is. I still don't get 3s on every hole. (Still learning.)

Camden 2 is on the other extreme not quite the "soul crusher" course described in the Disc Golf Family blog but it is one of the more difficult courses in the area as well as one of the most beautiful. Almost all 18 holes are in wooded ravines with a creek that runs through it with that I inevitably end up in at one point or the other. The creek can be challenging to get down to the bottom of if I throw my disc in it as it's more of a chasm at one end and at the other end, I've been up over my knees in sandy, mucky sludge wondering if I was going to be able to get out! All of that experience part of this great, beautiful course designed (I believe) by Pro Disc Golfer on the Innova Ambassadors team, Chris Sprague.

We're really blessed by the 12 courses within our immediate Quad Cities community as well as the variety and quality of player community, not only in their play quality but they're generosity and willingness to share.

Disc Golf Technique - Make It Your Own

Disc Golf Family posted a blog on making disc golf technique your own. This post wasn't quite what I expected from the title but valuable just the same.

Three main points or "Tips" are brought up in this blog post and they are:
      1) Diversify - practice a diverse amount of throwing styles.
      2) Practice Outside of a Round - practice various throws independent of playing a round of disc golf.
      3) A Balancing Act - Having only one strong throwing technique limits your options. Develop other elements of the game to add to your skillset of throws.
Don't forget this Friday 10 October 2014 is the last day for pre-registration for the Quad Cities Discraft Ace Race. You can pre-register at Iron Lion Disc Golf Supply at 2630 16th St, Moline, IL 61265, at the Bettendorf Life Fitness Center at 2222 Middle Rd, Bettendorf, IA 52722 or by contacting me at joe.nobiling@gmail.com. Pre-registration fee is $25.00 and gets you this year's player's pack and the opportunity to play in the Discraft Ace Race on October 26, 2014 at Middle Park's Disc Golf Course in Bettendorf, IA!

    The Backhand Bible

The Backhand Bible by Heavy Disc is Heavy Disc's bible on Backhand Drives. Pretty comprehensive in four "books," if you will, detailing his learning, strategy, and approach to 1) Footwork, 2) Hips, 3) Upper Body/Wide Reach and 4) Plant and Pivot.

There's always something to be gleaned from a different perspective.

    Another Top 10 List

Mind Body Disc had a good blog post on another Top 10 List titled "One Thing I Don’t Want in my Disc Golf Bag." This subject of this post is "top 10 reasons no one should ever knock another disc company."

A worthwhile commentary that a person should embrace and try to keep in mind on a minute-by-minute and day-to-day basis. We're all different. We're all human beings. Get along. Not only that but enjoy the differences in disc golf manufacturer's products and, most of all, learn to respect others, whether they be individuals or disc golf equipment manufacturers.

10 things That Annoy Disc Golfers

Disc Troy's blog had an interesting subject that I'm sharing with you here, The Top 10 Things That Disc Golfers Do (that really ANNOY other disc golfers).

I think we're pretty fortunate in the Quad Cities area as I don't see all ten of these annoying things but then I am a recreational player and, as such, am not out on a course on a daily basis. Doggone it!

Items 3) Vandalism, 2) Trash and Litter, and 1) Thieves are most familiar to me in my limited experience in our area. It seems the majority of Quad Cities area disc golfers are appreciative and considerate as well as helpful.

One aspect of thievery that I've seen and heard of is stealing discs. One such occurance took place while two people were playing the course!!! Not to mention their names and phone numbers were on their discs! Like Disc Troy states, "Disc golfers in general are a very socially acceptable group, if you need something, someone is always willing to give it to you, get it to you, work it out for you, or share it with you." I agree with Troy as I've witnessed and been the recipient of other players willingness to "give it to you, get it to you, work it out for you, or share it with you." Remember, as Steady Ed Headrick said, "Most Fun Wins!!!"

Sidearm of Forehand Disc Golf Shots

Disc Golf Family blog has gathered five different videos on forehand or sidearm disc golf throws. They're all very good and highly recommend giving them a view as the sidearm or forehand throw in disc golf is a good throw to start out with as it's quite a bit more natural than the backhand throw. Not to mention it's another throw to add to your arsenal of disc golf techniques. Some of the videos, Avery Jenkins', for example, you may have seen in a past posting in this blog. But there's one I'd never seen before where they show several pro's throws in slow motion. Good stuff!!!

    Midrange Approach Shot Basics

I've got little distance on my drives so I work at getting as close to the basket as I can when I'm close enough to reach it with a putter, mid-range or fairway driver. A newsletter from Average Disc Golf blog showed up in my inbox recently that contained the video below by Discraft and Scott Papa, Discgolfer Magazine's Instructional Editor. In this video, Scott "walks you through the essential elements of mid-range approach shots." Scott's also a Pro player who's been in the top 10 of the Masters division 5 of the last 7 Worlds Tourneys. I have a lot of respect for his tutorials.

Disc Golf Up Shot Technique to Control Distance Accurately

This post on Mind Body Disc's blog I found pretty beneficial. Especially since I'm still learning as well as trying to develop a good form. The author the blog titled Disc Golf Up Shot Technique to Control Distance Accurately was utilizing this method after experiencing issues with bulging and herniated discs in his back. His approach makes a lot of sense to me, especially the short videos he included in the post. Hope you readers find some benefit from it, too.

    Discin' 4 Dogs

The 10th Annual, and, I'm hearin' rumors the last, Discin' 4 Dogs Ace Race takes place at Camden 1 in Camden Park, Milan, IL on September 20.

This is a great and fun Ace Race where Camden 1 Disc Golf Course is transformed from an 18 hole to a 26 hole disc golf course. All holes are 100 feet or less from teepad to basket to encourage Aces (holes-in-one)! The crew that works this event goes all out with acquiring fantastic raffle prizes! $20 pre-registration fee will get you a Discin' 4 Dogs t-shirt ($25 will make it a dri-fit tee shirt) but you must be pre-registerd by Tuesday, September 16.

Iceland Disc Golf - shots, angles, and wind

The video below provides a few pointers about mid-range shots, drives, angles, and wind. It takes place at Gufunes disc golf course in Reykjavik, Iceland. The instructor has a bit different follow through than I've seen before. He also, at least not here, doesn't mention weight shift from the rear leg to the front leg. He does speak about having "slow feet." It's not a bad presentation on shots and their angles. There's also some good points on his grip and throwing into or with the wind.

    Tomas Ekström In The Bag

I thought this was an interesting "In the Bag" as it features Tomas Ekström, a pro player from Sweden. His English is pretty good and he sounds nothing like the Swedish Chef! Probably the most interesting part is he's a Latitude player and we get to hear and see what he throws from that line of discs. Enjoy!

In The Bag - Patrick Brown

Patrick Brown lives in San Francisco and is a member of the Innova Masters Team. Here's his In the Bag video. It's interesting, at least to me, to see what these folks carry and throw and why. Innova has been making discs from early on. I believe they're the oldest manufacturer of disc golf discs. Hopefully these posts don't promote any one make of disc golf discs over another as they're all good in their own right. Finding the discs that work best for an individual player, whether recreational or competitive, is a journey, no doubt. I still glean these videos for information that makes good sense to me. Ha! If that's possible! RIGHT?!?!? (those than know me should be laughin'!)

Ace during Dirty Dollar$ disc golf round - Mike Frame of Brown Park Fame

Dirty Dollar$ is a betting affair on the disc golf course.

Dirty Dollars Dirty Dollar$ - everyone who wants into the pot puts in a dollar and takes a tee shot on each hole. Alternate: Everyone who wants in (optional) throws down a dollar on the teepad - in the dirt thus the Dirty part of the bets - BEFORE people start throwing. Whoever is CTP collects the dollars, but we play that you have to validate, ie you have to make the putt for 2. With a mob this is tons of fun.

Then whomever on the hole was closest to the pin on a particular hole has to execute a birdie putt to collect the money. If they make it, the pot is theirs, if they miss, it carries over to the next hole.

Two common bets that can occur in disc golf are 51 - $5 for an ace and $1 for metal, and, 521 - $5 for an ace, $2 for chains, $1 for metal. Don't think I'll have that kind of disposable income to participate in a round like these. But, you never know. Might get a wild hair and do it sometime!

The large number of folks in the group shown in the video below is known as Mob Golf.

In The Bag - Kristie King

Kristie King is a member of the http://www.discgolf.com/ team member. She's got a mix of DGA and Discraft discs that she uses. Here's her In The Bag video from 2011 shot by MurderMike.

Here's Kristie's 2013 In The Bag video Central Coast Disc Golf which shows not just her discs but several of her shots from the tournament she was playing.

I have one DGA Rogue that I like a lot. I don't find them in our local disc golf supply shop. But they are available online from several retailers as well DGA.

    Beginner Disc Selection Advice

The video on this post is a good video on beginner disc selection. I'm not sure who this guy is but he sure has good advice in all of his videos. Wish I'd seen this video when I started playing three or so years ago.

The following is copied from his YouTube page for this video. Nice thing about the list of beginner discs does not favor any one disc manufacturer over others.

This is a video giving advice on how to decide which golf discs to buy during your first months / year as a disc golfer. A lot of this is my personal opinion based on what I've seen work for myself and others, as well as what has not worked. I think most things I've said can apply to all new players of the game, but don't take this video as gospel, test out what I'm telling you for yourself and if you think I'm wrong about something, say so. I am still learning just like you are.

To summarize, I recommend starting off throwing just mids and putters while you learn the fundamentals, then gradually working your way into the world of drivers beginning with the slower drivers (Fairway drivers).

Some molds I suggest working with are the following:

Putters: MVP Ions, Innova Aviars, Gateway Wizards, Discraft Challengers, Magnets Mids: MVP Axis, Discraft Comet, Buzz, Innova Shark, Roc, Latitude 64 Fuse Slow drivers: Innova Leopard, Teebird, Millennium JLS, Discraft Cyclone Fast Drivers: Millennium OLF, OLS, Discmania PD, TD, Innova Starfire, Valkyrie, Discraft Avenger and Avenger SS Max speed drivers: Millennium Quasar, Discraft Nuke, Innova Destroyer

There are plenty of other good discs out there, these are just discs I have personal experience with and feel are pretty good overall.

In general, work with slow, neutral discs in lighter weights (165-170g) to begin with, and as you learn the game slowly work faster discs into your bag if you find you can control them.

    Release Angles Tutorial

Watching the Will Shusterick video there is mention made of "release points." Not being sure of what is meant by "release points" I began a search on that in the videos and the web. What I have come to understand about "release points" or angles is that term refers to the way a shot is thrown to accomplish a flat shot, a hyzer or an anhyzer.

The DGA (Disc Golf Association) has a good instructional video on driving but there's no mention of release points. Merle mentions visualizing the line of flight but not "release points." The best video I came up with is below. It's a short video but packed with a lot of information, and good video footage of shots showing release angles or points. Hope this helps add to improving your disc golf game!

    Disc Dyeing Tutorial

Just found this Disc Dyeing Tutorial on All Things Disc Golf. Wanted to share it with you as it seems to be more recent than the previous posts on disc dyeing and it covers both stencil and shaving cream dyeing.

My first attempt wasn't highly successful as I didn't have the right dye. Hopefully, with the instructions in the above linked tutorial, future attempts will be more successful. Felix Castro recently dyed a disc using a stencil and it came out pretty well for a first attempt.

May all your disc dyeing attempts be successful beyond your wildest dreams!!!

All Things Disc Golf had an a post by Jack Trageser, The Ground Up, on saving strokes in terrain that is not flat. Here in the QCA we have a lot of courses with varying terrain. Not necessarily as dramatic as DeLaveaga and other courses in mountainous or hilly parts of the country but challenging just the same.

I'd seen the article "The Ground Up" before. What I don't recall is having gone to the link showing how four different pros; Greg Barsby, Patrick Brown, Don Smith, and Avery Jenkins, approach the downhill drive from the teepad, 550 feet, to the basket on the last hole, #27, of the DeLaveaga course.

At the end of each of the four videos are links to several other videos of shots atdifferent holes on the DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course. It looks like it'd be fun to play it!

    Enjoy!!!

Heavy Disc has a pretty good disc golf blog and the subject of HD's June 30 post is "Getting Picky on the Backhand." He also provides some stop frame images with lines indicating the his body alignment as well as three or four pro players.

Heavy Disc covers several aspects of his and others form. Plus, he included a bit of in depth input by a DGCR (Disc Golf Course Review) form master, Sidewinder 22.

I've been working on my stand still delivery as recommended by Will Shusterick in his driving video. Don't think I've ever used a hop step though I've seen Kalvin Kalafut use that when he's been out on league night.

Below is a super slow motion video of Shusterick driving. This video was shot at 300 frames per second! That's pretty cool!

The Felix Castro 3 Disc Challenge

Eight Clock Tower Disc Golf League players waited out the rain last Thursday to participate in The Felix Castro 3 Disc Challenge at Slattery Park in Davenport. Each player's entry fee netted them a specially stamped Discraft driver, mid-range and putter.

Felix and Tom waiting out the storm before getting to pick their discs.

There were two models of drivers to choose from, a Surge (Z Plastic) or a Stalker (CryZtal Plastic). The mid-range discs were Buzzzes in either Z Plastic or CryZtal Plastic. (Any Buzzz is a great mid-range in my opinion.) The putters were Bangers in Pro-D Plastic.

A good time was had by all as most had never thrown either of the disc models except for Felix and I who both use Buzzzes. Thus, the challenge of playing with discs we'd never thrown before. I believe all left with a better understanding of the discs acquired as participants in this challenge.

    Jotham focusing on his upshot.

    Pete focusing on his upshot.

Felix throwing his upshot on No. 2.

Shawn Clark teeing off. Shawn took first place with a score of 54.

Tom Lafrenz taking his upshot to the basket on No. 5. Tom took second place with a score of 55!

There are still some Buzzzes, Surges and Stalkers available for purchase. The Credit Union will have a sample of each of the discs available on display. Purchases can be made by contacting Joe Nobiling at 309-794-5671 or visiting me at my desk, if you work at the Clock Tower.

And the winners of the Close To Pin discs are; Shawn Clark, Felix Castro and Jotham Povich! Todd Hazen is on the far left and Yogi Patel is on the far right.

The Zen of Disc Golf or Playing In The Zone

"Playing in the zone" is a saying you hear quite often. It usually refers to extraordinary play or performance. Artists probably consider being "in touch with their Muse" the same as "being in the Zone." In Disc golf, as in other sports and areas of life, being in the zone can be elusive or difficult to accomplish for an extended period of time. And, that period of time can be of any length of time, too!

Being in the zone or the Zen of anything, to me, refers to being one with whatever I'm trying to accomplish whether it be drawing, playing music, or throwing a golf disc well. It's that feeling of total immersion where I lose my self. It's selflessness. It is a constant quest and challenge.

One other way of thinking of playing in the zone is playing in a vacuum or, as expressed in Zen, empty mind. "This refers to playing disc golf with a single objective that exists in complete isolation in the mind of a disc golfer: planning and executing the flight path of a flying disc." This quoted statement is at the heart of The School of Disc Golf's philosophical concept at the center their teachings on the mental approach to the game of disc golf.

Further thoughts presented on Playing In a Vacuum by The School of Disc Golf are as follows:

    ■ When playing Disc Golf in a Vacuum, there is no score, no round, no tournaments . . . there aren’t even holes. There is no last throw or next throw, at least in the conscious mind. There is only the present moment, and the challenge with which one is presented. In the present. In a total and complete vacuum.

    ■ When playing Disc Golf in a Vacuum, results are gauged and gratification earned by achieving the desired flight path. The context of golf is a unit of measurement to be applied at the end of the round.

    ■ Paradoxically, by learning to play Disc Golf in a Vacuum we free our minds of performance anxiety and can shoot our best scoring rounds of golf.

    ■ Most importantly, playing Disc Golf in a Vacuum produces a more substantial and lasting kind of enjoyment and gratification. It is practically impossible to not have fun! Controlling the disc is its own reward, and falling short of that objective presents the opportunity to learn and grow.

Stay tuned tomorrow for Disc Golf in a Vacuum, The Epiphany Parts 1 & 2.

Disc Golf - Beyond Winning and Losing

Here's a video by The Guardians of Recreation that is a bit over done yet entertaining and harbors some basic life truths all at the same time. Not to mention many of the bad shots remind me of my bad shots!

It is to LAUGH!!! And these guys, macrodetaos on youtube, are definitely having fun producing their videos as well as disc golf.

Here's The Guardian of Recreation Credo

Stress wears us down, until we have no energy left for anything except passive consumption. Consumption pervades our culture - through television, magazines, music, news, politics and drugs... everything that we do not create with our own thoughts and actions - but consume from some external source. A passive life is a life poorly lived.

Creative energy is the most potent and pleasurable force on this planet. Without creativity, nothing can begin, change or improve. Our species is ripe for re-creation.

We re-create ourselves when we play. Play is any creative activity that alleviates physical and mental stress.

Step one... turn off your TV and begin to re-create.

The Guardians believe that an equitable balance of work and play will reduce passivity and generate feelings of joy, freedom and enthusiasm. The resulting increase of creative energy will save the universe.

I have to say, I do agree with their credo wholeheartedly. Enjoy!

    Driving with Feldberg and Shusterick

These videos were posted late last year shortly after I came encountered them. Then, the other day, while playing a round with Félix he mentioned his field work where he is developing a powerful, big gun, hyzer and the advice he garnered from Shusterick's video on Driving. Shusterick's video promotes driving from a stand still position until one gets the mechanics of the throw down. It's good advice and, as Ken Climo says, this game's got a lot of little intricacies related to how one throws and the body movement.

Shusterick covers several points well in his video; working on the lower body, weight shift, practicing in a field, the reach back, keeping the disc close to the body with a little lean over the disc or the pull through, practice driving from a stand still position, and the involvement of the hip. Feldberg's video primarily focuses on involving the hip as crucial in facilitating distance.

Something Will doesn't speak about but is clearly evident in the video is how his fore foot goes from toes to heel to toes. He doesn't mention this as it appears to happen naturally just by good form. I've seen and heard this point brought up in a previous video. It may Feldberg's.

I thought putting these two videos on the same post would be good comparison from two different top players. Both explain their positions well. Hope these help you out like they're helping me out in my pursuit of getting better driving-wise.

    Understanding How Discs Fly

Here's an entertaining and very informative video for beginners that explains how discs work. It's designed for beginners who have no clue why discs fly the way they don't want them to. The plan is to help reduce frustration, play more better and have more fun. By the Guardians of Recreation.

There's lots of good information on discs from flight chart and numbering system explanation, disc selection, disc weight, overstable vs. stable vs. understable, anhyzer and hyzer angles, and disc flight in windless and windy situations. Plus, the video's background provides good contrast with the discs being thrown making the voiceover easy to follow the discs flight path.

The Rules of the Game - DISCRETIONARY RULES and Q&As

    806. Discretionary Rules

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 15:02.

Discretionary rules are rules that may be invoked by the Director without prior approval from the PDGA. Any discretionary rule that is in effect must be announced by the Director prior to the tournament and in the players' meeting.

    806.01 Two-meter Rule

    Last updated: Wednesday, December 26, 2012 - 13:31.

    A. If a disc has come to rest above two meters, as measured from the lowest point of the disc to the playing surface directly below it, the player shall be assessed a one-throw penalty. The player shall then proceed in accordance with 802.02.C.

    B. If the lie directly below the disc on the playing surface is out-of-bounds, the disc is played as out-of-bounds regardless of its height above the playing surface.

    C. A disc supported by the target is not subject to the two-meter rule.

    D. If the thrower moves the disc before a determination has been made, the disc is considered to have come to rest above two meters.

    E. The Director may declare the two-meter rule to be in effect for the entire course, for particular holes, and/or for individual objects.

    808. Rules Q & A

There's a broad range of Questions and Answers with respect to the Rules can be found at 808. Rules Q & A . Some of the Q & As include: Legal Throwing Styles, What is "Demonstrate Balance" for Putts?, Spider Webs, Crooked Straddle, etc.

The Rules of the Game - TOURNAMENT PROCEDURES (Scoring)

Many of us may never play in a tournament. With that in mind, this post will only cover Scoring but the Appeals and Special Conditions sections can be found on the Tournament Procedures section of the PDGA website.

The scoring section has information that's worth knowing and so is included here.

    805.02 SCORING

    Last updated: Wednesday, December 26, 2012 - 13:26.

    A. The player listed first on the scorecard(s) bears primary responsibility for picking up the group's scorecard(s).

    B. Players in the group shall rotate the scorekeeping task proportionally, unless a player or a scorekeeper volunteers to keep score more and that is acceptable to all members of the group.

    C. After each hole is completed, the scorekeeper shall call out each player's name. The called player shall answer with the score in a manner that is clear to all players of the group and the scorekeeper. The scorekeeper shall record that score and read it back, in a manner that is clear to all players of the group. If there is any disagreement about the score a player reports, the group must review the hole and attempt to arrive at the correct score. If the group cannot reach consensus on the player's score, they shall consult 805.01.

    D. The scorekeeper shall record the score for each player on each hole as the total number of throws, including penalty throws. The total score for the round shall also be recorded as the sum of all hole scores, plus any additional penalty throws. The use of anything other than a number (including the lack of a score) represents an incorrect hole or total score and is subject to penalty as described below.

    E. Warnings and penalty throws given to a player for rules infractions shall be noted on the scorecard.

    F. At the end of the round, each player shall sign the scorecard to attest to the accuracy of the score on each hole as well as the total score. If all players of the group agree that a hole score was recorded in error, the score may be changed prior to the scorecard being turned in. Players whose scorecards are turned in unsigned accept responsibility for the scores recorded.

    G. All players are responsible for returning their scorecards within 30 minutes of the completion of a round. The round has been officially completed for all competitors when the last group on the course has completed their final hole and has had, in the Director's opinion, reasonable time to travel from their final hole to tournament headquarters. Failure to turn in the scorecard on time shall result in the assessment of two penalty throws, without a warning, to each player listed on the late scorecard.

    H. After the scorecard is turned in, the total score as recorded shall stand with no appeal, except for the following circumstances:

      1. Penalty throws may be assessed at whatever time the infraction is discovered until the Director declares the tournament officially over or all awards have been distributed.

      2. If it is determined that the total score was incorrectly recorded, either by an error on a hole score or by an error in totaling the hole scores, including omission of the total score, the director shall add two penalty throws to the correct total score. These penalty throws are not added when the Director corrects a player's score for other infractions determined after the player had turned in an otherwise correct scorecard.

The Rules of the Game - GENERAL (part 2)

    801.04 COURTESY

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:20.

    A. Players should not throw until they are certain that the thrown disc will not distract another player or potentially injure anyone present.

    B. Players should watch the other members of their group throw in order to aid in locating errant throws and to ensure compliance with the rules.

    C. Players should take care not to produce any auditory or visual distractions while other players are throwing. Distracting actions include: shouting, cursing, freestyling, striking course equipment, throwing out of turn, throwing or kicking golf bags, throwing minis, and advancing on the fairway beyond the away player. Shouting at an appropriate time to warn someone in danger of being struck by a disc is not a courtesy violation.

    D. Refusal to perform an action expected by the rules, such as assisting in the search for a lost disc, moving discs or equipment, or keeping score properly, is a courtesy violation.

    E. Littering is a courtesy violation.

    F. Courtesy dictates that players who smoke should not allow their smoke to disturb other players. Disposing of a cigarette butt by dropping it on the ground is littering.

    G. A player violating a courtesy rule may be warned by any affected player, even if from another group, or by an official. The player shall be assessed one penalty throw for each subsequent courtesy violation of any type in the same round. Repeated violations of courtesy rules may result in disqualification in accordance with Section 3.3 of the Competition Manual.

    801.05 ORDER OF PLAY

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:20.

    A. Teeing order for the first hole to be played is determined by the order in which the players are listed on the scorecard(s).

    B. Teeing order on all subsequent holes is determined by the scores on the previous hole, with the lowest score throwing first, and so on. If the previous hole was a tie, the scores are to be counted back until the order is resolved.

    C. After all the players in the group have teed off, the away player throws next. After that and each subsequent throw, the player who is then the away player throws next, until all players in the group have holed out.

    D. To facilitate flow of play, a player who is not the away player may throw if the away player consents.

    E. During tournament play, no group may play through the group ahead unless the group ahead is required to stand aside in accordance with the rules or as directed by an official.

    F. Throwing out of turn is a courtesy violation.

    801.06 PRACTICE THROWS

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:21.

    A. A practice throw made during the round shall result in one penalty throw being added to the thrower's score.

    Thursday, May 22, 2014

The Rules of the Game - GENERAL (part 1)

    801.01 APPLICATION OF THE RULES

    Last updated: Wednesday, December 26, 2012 - 17:23.

    A. These rules have been designed to promote fair play for all disc golfers. In using these rules, players shall apply the rule that most directly addresses the situation at hand. If any point in dispute is not covered by the rules, the decision shall be made in accordance with fairness. Often a logical extension of the closest existing rule or the principles embodied in these rules will provide guidance for determining fairness.

    B. Players are expected to call a violation when one has clearly occurred. Calls must be made promptly.

    C. If in doubt, players may attempt to consult an official. If none is available, players have the option of proceeding with provisional throws as described in 804.06.

    D. A player shall not receive a warning for a rules violation unless the rule specifically provides for a warning. Warnings do not carry over from one round to the next round or to a playoff.

    E. A rules violation that results in a warning may be called by any player in the group, or by an official. All players in the group shall be advised of the warning, and it shall be noted on the scorecard.

    F. A rules violation that results in one or more penalty throws may be called by any player in the group, or by an official. If called by a player, it must then be seconded by another player in the group.

    G. Unless otherwise stated, any determination made by the group as a whole shall be made by a majority of the group, or by an official.

    H. A throw or an action that is subject to penalty under more than one rule shall be marked and/or penalized in accordance with the rule that results in the most penalty throws, or, among rules that call for an equal penalty, the rule that was first violated.

    801.02 DISCS USED IN PLAY

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:18.

    A. Discs used in play must meet all of the conditions set forth in the PDGA Technical Standards.

    B. A disc which has been modified after production such that its original flight characteristics have been altered is illegal, excepting wear from usage during play and the moderate sanding of discs to smooth molding imperfections or scrapes. Discs excessively sanded or painted with a material of detectable thickness are illegal.

    C. A disc which is cracked or perforated is illegal.

    D. A disc that is questioned by another player or an official is illegal unless it is subsequently approved by the Director.

    E. A player who throws an illegal disc during play shall receive two penalty throws, without a warning. A player who repeatedly throws an illegal disc during the round may be subject to disqualification in accordance with Section 3.3 of the PDGA Competition Manual.

    F. All discs used in play, except mini marker discs, must be uniquely marked. A player shall receive a warning for the first instance of throwing an unmarked disc. Each subsequent throw by the player with an unmarked disc shall incur one penalty throw.

    801.03 ARTIFICIAL DEVICES

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:19.

    A. During a round, a player shall not use any artificial device that may directly assist in making a throw, except those devices that reduce or control abrasion to the skin (such as gloves, tape, bandages, or gauze) and medical items (such as knee or ankle braces). Placing an object as a directional aid is not allowed. An item such as a towel or a pad may be placed on the lie as long as it is not greater than one centimeter in thickness when compressed.

    B. A device that is questioned by another player or an official is illegal unless it is subsequently approved by the Director.

    C. A player shall receive two penalty throws, without a warning, if observed at any time during a round to be using an illegal artificial device. A player who repeatedly uses an illegal device may be subject to disqualification in accordance with Section 3.3 of the PDGA Competition Manual.

The Rules of the Game - INTRODUCTION

Yeah, yeah. I know. Why does this section show up here and not at the very start of this series of posts on the Rules? It's the workings of a "not-right mind." Really, I felt that since this blog is for a league that's been in existence for going on three years that most everyone involved has a basic understanding of the game. Then, remorse set in as I thought, "Better include all that's found on the PDGA site about the Rules for the bare bones beginner so they get the whole picture." So, here I go adding subjects that are listed in the very beginning of the PDGA's discussion about the rules.

    800.01 DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:13.

The object of the game of disc golf is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest throws of the disc. The competitor who plays the stipulated round or rounds in the fewest throws plus penalty throws is the winner.

Play on each hole begins at the teeing area and ends at the target. After the player has thrown from the tee, each successive throw is made from where the previous throw came to rest. On completing a hole, the player proceeds to the teeing area of the next hole, until all holes have been played.

Disc golf courses are normally laid out in and around wooded areas with diverse terrain to provide natural obstacles to the flight of the disc. These natural obstacles are very much a part of the game and must not be altered by a player in any way to decrease the difficulty of a hole. Players must play the course as they find it and play the disc where it lies unless allowed otherwise by these rules.

    800.02 DEFINITIONS

    Last updated: Monday, December 24, 2012 - 18:13.

APPROXIMATE LIE - A lie established by the player's group in order to resume play from a lie which is not marked.

APPROXIMATE POSITION - A position established by the player's group that is as close as possible to the original position of the disc.

AWAY PLAYER - The player whose lie is farthest from the target.

CASUAL WATER - A body of water which is not out-of-bounds, and which has not been declared by the Director to not be casual water.

CHAINS - A deflection assembly which is designed to direct a thrown disc down into the tray component of a basket target.

CHAIN SUPPORT - The structure from which the chains are suspended; a deflector support which often forms the top of a basket target.

DIRECTOR - The person in charge of the tournament or event. The term Director may refer to the Tournament Director, or to a Course Director in a tournament played on multiple courses.

DROP ZONE - An area on the course, as designated by the Director, from which play is resumed as an alternative to or in replacement of play from the lie. The throwing area from within a drop zone is marked and played in a manner similar to the marking and playing of a teeing area. A teeing area may be used as a drop zone. A drop zone is a lie.

GROUP - The competitors who are assigned to play a round together for the purpose of verifying scores and ensuring play in accordance with the rules.

HOLE - A numbered segment of the course that is a separate unit for scoring.

HOLE OUT - To successfully complete play of a hole.

IN-BOUNDS - Any area of the course that is not out-of-bounds.

LIE - The spot on the playing surface behind the marker, upon which the player takes a stance in accordance with the rules. It is a line 30 centimeters in length extending back along the line of play from the rear edge of the marker disc. The lie for the first throw on a hole is the teeing area. A drop zone is also a lie.

LINE OF PLAY - The imaginary line on the playing surface extending from the center of the target through the center of the marker disc and beyond.

MANDATORY An object or objects that the disc must pass in a designated manner. A mandatory functions to limit the allowable path the disc may take to the target.

MARKER (or Marker Disc) - The mini marker disc or the thrown disc at rest, either of which may be used to indicate the lie from which the next throw is to be made.

MINI MARKER DISC (or Mini) - A small disc, not used in play, which may be used to mark the location of the lie.

OBSTACLE - Any feature of the course that may impede any aspect of play.

OFFICIAL - A person who is authorized to make judgments regarding the proper application of the rules during play.

OUT-OF-BOUNDS - An area designated by the Director from which a disc may not be played, and within which a stance may not be taken. The out-of-bounds line extends a plane vertically upward and downward. The out-of-bounds line is part of the out-of-bounds area.

PAR - As determined by the Director, the score an expert disc golfer would be expected to make on a given hole with errorless play under ordinary weather conditions, allowing two throws from close range to hole out.

PENALTY THROW - A throw added to a player's score for violating a rule, or for relocation of the lie, as called for by a rule.

PLAYERS' MEETING - A meeting of players with the Director prior to a tournament, where players are given instructions about tournament procedures, the course, and any special conditions which will apply during the tournament.

PLAYING SURFACE - A surface, generally the ground, which is capable of supporting the player and from which a stance can reasonably be taken. A playing surface may exist above or below another playing surface. In cases where it is unclear whether a surface is a playing surface, the decision shall be made by the Director or an official.

POLE - A central pipe or post which supports the other components of a basket target.

POSITION - The location of the disc after it has been thrown and has initially come to rest.

PRACTICE THROW - A throw of more than two meters during a competitive round that does not change the lie. Provisional throws, misplayed throws, and stance violations are not practice throws.

PREVIOUS LIE - The lie resulting from the most recent throw, as evidenced by the marker disc or, if the marker disc has been moved, the corresponding approximate lie.

PROVISIONAL THROW (or Provisional) - An extra throw, sanctioned by the player's group or an official, that is part of an alternative sequence of throws that may be used in the case of a disputed ruling or to save time. Only one set of throws will be counted in the player's score once a final ruling is made.

PUTT - Any throw from 10 meters or less as measured from the rear of the marker disc to the base of the target.

RELIEF - A change made to the player's lie or surrounding area, such that an obstacle is removed from the vicinity, or when that is impractical, the lie is relocated away from the obstacle.

RE-THROW - An additional throw from the same lie which is played instead of the previous throw from that lie.

SUPPORTING POINT - At the time of release, any part of a player's body that is in contact with the playing surface or some other object that provides support.

TARGET - A device whose purpose is to clearly determine completion of a hole. A basket target is designed to catch discs and generally consists of a tray, chains, and a chain support mounted on a pole. An object target generally has a marked target area.

TEE LINE - The line at the front of the teeing area, or the line between the outside edges of two tee markers.

TEEING AREA (or Tee) - The area bounded by the edges of a tee pad, if provided. Otherwise, the area extending three meters perpendicularly behind the designated tee line. The teeing area is also a lie.

THROW - The propulsion of a disc by a player that results in a new lie.

TRAY (or Basket) - An open-topped receptacle into which the disc may fall or be thrown.

WARNING - Where prescribed by a rule, the initial advisement a player is given for violating that rule, making the player susceptible to receiving a penalty throw for subsequent violations of that rule within the same round.
